for its extensive collections of American art from the
17th through the 20th centuries, modern and contemporary
art, international textiles, art from Central and South
America, the Pacific and Africa, the de Young’s opening weekend
on Oct. 15-16 will emphasize the “common
ground” to be found through art.
Midnight tours, performances
by the San Francisco Symphony, Ballet, Opera, poet laureates, the
American Conservatory Theatre and a multitude of multicultural artists
are on the schedule. Sunday is Family Day with special hands-on
activities for visitors of all ages.
The new facility designed by the
Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de
Meuron and Fong & Chan Architects San Francisco features a unique
copper façade and an observation tower that rises 144 feet
above Golden Gate Park. The opening exhibit, “Hatshepsut:
From Queen to Pharaoh,” highlights the art created during
the glorious reign of the female pharaoh Hatshepsut.
